B.Tech. (Semester 4th)
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS-1

(CE-208)

(SECTION-A)
(2X10=20)

Q1)

a) state Moment Area Theorems.
b) define Maxwell's Reciprocal Theorem.
c) Differentiate between thin cylinder and thick cylinder.
d) what is Castigliano's first theorem.
e) what do you mean by middle third rule.
f) where influence lines are used.
g) difference between determinate and indeterminate trusses.
h) where spandrel braced arches are used.
i) what is the difference between stret and tie?
j) what are teh dominant types of stresses acting in the three hinged arches?

(Section- B)
(4X5=20)

Attempt any four questions from Section B

Q2) Find the deflection in the beam at free end as shown below.

Q3) Calculate the safe working pressure for a spherical vessel, 1 m diameter and 1cm wall thickness, if the tensile stress is limited to 400kg/cubic cm.

Q4) A masonary wall of a trapezoidal section 1m wide at the top and 4 m wide at the bottom is 6 m high. it has to retain water on its vertical side up to top leve. find the maximum and minimum stress intensities at the base section, if the masonary weighs 1920 kg/cubic m.

Q5) a uniform load of 2000 kg/m, 5m long crosses a girder of 25m span from leftj to right. calculate the maximum S.F and B.M at the section 8m from left hand support.

Q6) Differentiate between three hinged arches, two hinged arches, fixed arches and spandrel braced arches.

(Section C)

(2X10=20)

Attempt any 2 questions from section C

Q7) Derive an expression for maximum positive B.M. and maximum negative B.M. for a three hinged arch using influence lines. When suspected to point rolling load.

Q8) Draw I.L. for forces in the top, bottom and inclined members of a truss shown below.

Q9) (a) What is the conjugate beam method for the deflection of beams.

(b) A suspension cable is supported at two points 20 m apart. the left support is 2m above the right support. the cable is loaded with uniformly distributed load of 1 f/m throughout the span. the maximum dip in the cable from left support level is 4 m. find the maximum tension in the cable.
